Zechariah 4:10 For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth.
I have been thinking a lot lately about the small things, the things that no one sees, or wants to do.
You all know what I mean, the messy, unglamorous jobs that everyone shuns, but someone has to do them, and let’s just face it , it is usually the Mum or the Dad in the family! These kind of jobs are a necessary part of the smooth running of a family home, without them being done the home would fall into disarray and our family homes would be featuring on the next installment of ‘World’s Greatest Hoarders’! (Well perhaps not, but you get my meaning).
The problem is there are no accolades for the person who works these jobs. No one sees, no one cares unless; IT IS NOT DONE! (Gasp!)
Then EVERYONE starts to notice!
“Where are my clean clothes?”
“The toilets need cleaning!”
“There’s no milk in the fridge.”
“We’ve run out of toilet paper.”
“There’s nothing to eat!” On and on; the complaints come rolling in….
We’ve all been there. It is the same in every area of life. Walk into any office and there will be people who can’t be bothered to wash their own coffee cup, but will complain if the kitchen is dirty. Go down to your local sport’s club, and you will find the same people, doing the same jobs week in and week out while the rest of the members complain on the sidelines.
Why is this?
It is easy to do things when we are acknowledged, valued and appreciated. It is easy to do the jobs that everyone sees and values.
But when we’re down in the trenches and no one sees, cares or values what you do , it is then that our work becomes of even greater value.
You see; our God values the ‘small things’, the things that are done in secret, with no fan fare and no accolades. To Him they are VERY important!
Our God sees all! Every small act of kindness. Every floor vacuumed. Every prayer whispered. Every piece of rubbish picked up in the church parking lot. Every note of encouragement. Every toilet scrubbed. Every hour we spend in the service of others.
Friend; do not ‘ despise the day of small things. In God’s eyes they are VERY IMPORTANT. He sees. He knows. He cares and will reward you in His time.
Matthew 6:4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
Keep doing the ‘small things’ because in God’s eyes they are the big things!
